It's been a while since I've seen the sun. I mean that in the most literal sense: I legitimately have not seen the sun since last Sunday, I think. Maybe it came out for a few seconds the other day, but by the time I laced up my sneakers to go for what I hoped would be a dry run, the sun had somehow escaped me and slipped back behind monstrous and dreary grey clouds. So I went for a very very wet run instead.
I had been warned about winter in Wellington. There is a reason they call it "windy Welly." I guess I had just been lucky up until now, but winter is definitely upon me. This is especially depressing considering all of my friends at home are starting to pull out spring clothes. I swear, if I see one more "Wait Chapel with cherry blossoms" Instagram I might lose it.
Not only do I still not fully grasp the concept of Celsius (I guess 15 degrees really isn't that cold!) it has been pretty depressing to see either the clouds, the rain, or the wind icons on my iPhone when I check the forecast in the morning. I have definitely gotten used to seeing the wind icon, but I'm a little bit sick of the rain at this point. Sadly, it seems like we have another week ahead of us with similar, dismal weather.
That being said, I have been able to look past the weather and I've still been enjoying everything Wellington has to offer. Take coffee shops for example. There is nothing cozier than a coffee shop on a rainy day. So as long as I don't forget my raincoat, I've been handling the rain pretty well. Since I'd rather be on Pinterest than studying, I found this nice quote and I really liked it:

I've been doing my best to embrace the weather, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't itching for the sun to make an appearance (and to stay, for a while).
Based on a few things that have happened this week this quote also kind of applies in a more figurative sense. I've been dealing with a lot of computer issues, losing papers that were already written and dealing with Wake's IT department from the other side of the world. I also lost my phone (whoops) and have had a somewhat surprising and overwhelming amount of work that I wasn't expecting. I am definitely taking more difficult classes than I anticipated, and while I only need to pass them, it's not exactly in my nature to be "okay" with getting C's.
So maybe not the most uplifting and stellar week in New Zealand thus far, but I figure that is to be expected. You can't have the epic weekends without a few down weeks. Nonetheless, Wellington is still pretty, even in the rain and when I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and dreary.

But wait!
Hope is not lost.
Part of the reason I've been so content with staying in Wellington these past few weekends (I mean, aside from the fact that I love it here) is because of the trip I have planned from May 18th-May 2nd! Myself and four friends are hopping down to the south island for two weeks of adventure. We have the whole thing mapped out, a rental car booked, and a tent purchased. I'll share the itinerary soon. But for now I have two papers, an accounting assignment and a commercial law test to get through. Then I'm FREE! Well, for two weeks.
On top of all this excitement, my birthday is also coming up! For many of you who know me, I LOVE my birthday. I don't understand people who say they're "not birthday people." What does that even mean? I'm sorry, but if society gives you a day to celebrate you, you take it and run with it. Which is why I am swimming with wild dolphins on my birthday. This is a video promotion for the company that we booked the swim with so I can only hope it will be as amazing as this:

Last but not least, the Royals (Will and Kate and baby Prince George) are in New Zealand! They arrived in Wellington last Monday and didn't provide for too many public viewings. Currently they're traveling around the country, but they'll be back on Wednesday and despite my commercial law exam later that evening, I have every intention of seeing them as they're doing a somewhat public drive down one of the main streets in the city. If I could just catch a glimpse of those precious prince baby cheeks I'd be one happy tourist. Here is a picture of the fam at a playdate Prince George had with some very lucky Wellington babies. SO CUTE.
Oh and this was pretty funny. When they arrived, the royal couple was greeted by traditional Maori warriors. I think the picture says it all. Only Kate Middleton could look THAT composed when dealing with tattooed butts. She is such an inspiration.
I'll leave you with that!
If I think of it later in the week I'll be sure to post an expected itinerary for the next two weeks as I don't see myself blogging about any of it until early May.
Here's to hoping the rain stops and the sun comes out!
